LUFKIN, Texas – What started as a routine demolition project turned into a viral sensation. A contractor uncovered a piece of Texas history hiding in plain sight – a vintage Dr Pepper mural that’s been sealed away for decades.

It was during a routine demolition project at a jail in Lufkin that revealed the vintage Dr Pepper mural that could be 100 years old.

Joy Summer with the Dr Pepper Museum in Waco says the mural aligns with the company’s advertising in the 1920’s and 1930s.

“It talked about it being good for children, and that was definitely a part of Dr Pepper’s advertising in the 1920s and 1930s. Not at all today though,” explained Smith.

Smith says in that era soft drink companies marketed their products as healthy refreshments for the whole family.

There’s another detail on this mural, the famous “10, 2, and 4” campaign.

“So in the 1920s, there was a study done that noticed that people’s blood sugar levels dropped at 10:30, 2:30 and 4:30, so Dr Pepper asked their advertising company to come up with a way to use this particular idea.”

The museum has its own vintage mural on display that goes back to the 30’s and 40’s. It’s unclear how many other murals are out there.
