Manchester United minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has given Ruben Amorim his full backing as head coach after a poor start to the 2025/26 season.

After seven Premier League matches, winning three and losing as many, Ruben Amorim has faced fierce scrutiny as Manchester United’s head coach.

United are sitting 10th in the Premier League table, and Amorim has received more column inches than any other football manager in Europe.

The former Sporting CP boss, who won two Portuguese league titles in Lisbon, has failed to record back-to-back wins in the Premier League since arriving at Old Trafford 11 months ago.

Until now, Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s stance on Amorim has been unknown, apart from reports that stated Ineos were prepared to give him time to turn things around.

United fans continue to sing Amorim’s name from the terraces, which tells you that the home and away support are still rallying behind the 40-year-old.

It wasn’t part of the script when United appointed Amorim that there would be doubts over his future before his first anniversary at the club.

Sadly, Amorim has faced constant criticism since he took control of United’s first team on November 1, 2024, following Erik ten Hag’s sacking.

Sky Sports News are getting to dedicate plenty of coverage to conversations over his future, with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink being the latest pundit to air his thoughts on the current situation at United.

United’s poor start to the season led to suggestions that Amorim’s job was under threat, but Ratcliffe has dismissed those claims by stressing he has three years to show he is a great coach.

“He has not had the best of seasons. Ruben needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years. That’s where I would be,” Ratcliffe told The Business podcast, cited by the Daily Mail.

“The press, sometimes I don’t understand. They want overnight success. They think it’s a light switch. You know, you flick a switch and it’s all going to be roses tomorrow.

“You can’t run a club like Manchester United on knee-jerk reactions to some journalist who goes off on one every week.”

This should take some of the pressure off Amorim’s shoulders, but United still need to improve results on the pitch if the Red Devils are to reach previous heights again.

What happens if the Glazers want to sack Ruben Amorim?

When Ratcliffe became a co-owner in a minority capacity at United, the Glazers gave Ineos full control of football operations at the club.

Ratcliffe was asked on the same podcast what would happen if the Glazers decided to give Amorim the axe without Ratcliffe’s approval.

“It’s not going to happen,” Ratcliffe said.

“That probably sums it up. We’re local and they’re the other side of the pond.

“That’s a long way away to try and manage a football club as big as complex as Manchester United. We’re here with feet on the ground.

“They get a bad rap…but they are really nice people and they are really passionate about the club.”

Amorim can now focus on preparing for United’s next game against Liverpool after the October international break.
