Uruguay’s Lucía Garibaldi entered the world of cinema with the coming-of-age film The Sharks (Los tiburones, 2019), which won the World Cinema Dramatic Directing Award at Sundance.

Her second feature, A Bright Future (Un futuro brillante, 2025), won Tribeca’s Viewpoints Award and opens the fifth annual edition of San Antonio’s Raza Cósmica film festival, which includes movies from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Scotland, the United Arab Emirates and, yes, the United States.

A Bright Future is a slow-burning, dystopian sci-fi drama centered around “the North,” a mysterious destination for those living in a place without dogs and where youth is almost extinct.

The film offers a subtle critique of capitalism that explores whether it’s worth going to “paradise,” but not in the usual, cliched way — for good or bad, you won’t forget the “smell dance.”

A Bright Future is a magical journey aided by clever visuals and solid performances by its cast.

But, as This Is Spinal Tap‘s Marty DiBergi would say, Raza Cósmica has more. A lot more. Check MonteVideo’s website for complete details, including a live podcast and screening at the Central Library on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Free, 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, Arthouse at Blue Star, 134 Blue Star, (210) 812-4355, montevideo210.org.
