The first round of the 2025 Wimbledon Championships began Monday from London’s All England Lawn Tennis Club with action featuring matches from betting favorites Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka, joined by Americans Madison Keys, Taylor Fritz and Francis Tiafoe, among others.

Coming off his French Open title over world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, Alcaraz needed five sets to get past Italian Fabio Fognini 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 to extend his grass court winning streak. Alcaraz failed to bring high energy against the 38-year-old Italian for nearly four hours before dominating in the fifth set.

Alcaraz is trying to become the first player on the men’s tour since Bjorn Borg to complete the French Open-Wimbledon double in consecutive years. He is also only the third defending Wimbledon champion to be taken to five sets in the first round of the following year’s Grand Slam.

Ninth-seeded Daniil Medvedev lost to Benjamin Bonzi 7-6 (2), 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2, in a notable upset on the men’s side. After reaching the Wimbledon semifinals last year, Medvedev showed frustration during another stunning first-round departure for the second consecutive Grand Slam after struggling as well in the French Open. Bonzi had not won on grass in three years before beating Medvedev, who said after the match he was “surprised” by his opponent’s play.

Sabalenka, the top seed in the women’s bracket, made quick work of Carson Branstine, 6-1, 7-5. After winning her second career Grand Slam in Paris, American Coco Gauff begins play Tuesday, along with Sinner and Novak Djokovic, who’s seeking his record-extending 25th major on the men’s side.

Djokovic has won Wimbledon seven times previously and said before the tournament this could be his last appearance in London. For Fritz, Tiafoe and other American men, they’ll try and become the first winner from the states since Pete Sampras won Wimbledon in 2000.

Fritz has the best shot at making history after beating Alexander Zverev earlier this month in the grass court warmup Stuttgart Open but he finds himself in a battle hard-hitting Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Fritz dropped the first two sets, claimed the third and won then a tiebreak in the fourth set by rallying back from 5-2 to extend the match and keep his hopes alive. With the 11 p.m. curfew looming, the decision was made not to start the fifth set on Monday night and instead push it to Tuesday.

Fritz has twice reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon with his best major finish coming in the finals of last year’s U.S. Open.
