Controversial change to hunting mountain lions around Rapid City approved

  • October 10, 2025

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – The South Dakota Legislative Rules and Review Committee approved a controversial change to hunting mountain lions in the Black Hills.

State legislators gave the green-light to expanding where dogs can be used to detect wildcats in the Black Hills Fire Protection District including some private land.

South Dakota Public Broadcasting reports Representative Roger DeGroot calls this a win-win.

He says in addition to giving people more areas to hunt in, this change gives landowners more options to getting mountain lions off their property.
