Monday, Oct. 13 will mark not one but two holidays: Columbus Day and Indigenous People’s Day.
A federal holiday observed on the second Monday of each October, Columbus Day has been celebrated since 1892, when it was established to honor Christopher Columbus’ historic voyage. While not a federal holiday, Indigenous People’s Day has become common in recent years as a way to recognize contributions made by Native Americans and detest Columbus’ treatment of native peoples.
President Joe Biden became the first U.S. president to formally recognize Indigenous People’s Day, issuing a proclamation in 2021. Biden recognized both holidays that year, which President Donald Trump has signaled he won’t do in 2025.
Earlier this week, Trump signed a proclamation declaring Oct. 13 as Columbus Day, honoring the explorer, who he called an “American hero.”
As the holiday approaches, you might be wondering what will be open and if services like mail delivery or garbage pickup will be operating as usual.
Here’s what you need to know:
Will banks be open?
The majority of banks will be closed for the day as Oct. 13 is a Federal Reserve holiday. Chase Bank branches will be open, but online transactions won’t be available, according to its website.
What about the post office? Will mail be delivered?
Monday is federal holiday, meaning U.S. Postal Service locations will be closed, and mail won’t be delivered.
Will the stock market be closed?
The stock market will be open on Monday, though U.S. bond markets will be closed.
Will state and federal agencies be open?
State agencies including the Secretary of State’s Office won’t be open, as Illinois observes Columbus Day as an official state holiday. That will also be in the case in Indiana.
With it being a federal holiday, most federal government agencies won’t be open. This year, some agencies have already closed due to the ongoing government shutdown.
Will FedEx and UPS make deliveries? What about their stores?
Pickup and delivery services will be available through both FedEx and UPS. Store locations will also be open, according to both companies.
Will my garbage be picked up on Monday?
Whether pickup will take place Monday depends on where you live and who provides garbage services. In the city of Chicago, there will be no garbage service citywide or recycling service in areas 2 or 4.
For instance, if you receive garbage services through either Waste Management or Republic Services, both companies will be operating their routes as usual.
