Aryna Sabalenka, the four-time Grand Slam champion, narrowly avoided disqualification from the Wuhan Open on Saturday after an outburst of frustration during her semifinal match against Jessica Pegula.
Sabalenka had a strong showing in Wuhan, overcoming Rebecca Sramkova in her first match after rallying from a set down, and then decisively defeating Liudmila Samsonova and Elena Rybakina to secure a semi-final face-off with long-standing rival Pegula. Sabalenka, who bested Pegula in last month’s US Open semi-finals, dominated the American in the first set.
After losing a crucial point at 5-5 in the deciding set, Sabalenka hurled her racket towards her bench. The racket rebounded off the bench and spiraled back towards the court, narrowly missing a cameraman.
Had it struck the cameraman, the Belarusian would have been automatically disqualified. Instead, she received a warning from the umpire.
Following the match, Sabalenka took to Instagram to share her thoughts on her performance in Wuhan. The 27-year-old told her followers: “That’s a wrap on @wuhanopenwta. Not the ending I wanted but thankful for the time spent here.”
She added, “Thank you to the fans for the support and making this stadium feel like home.”
After a hard-fought victory over Sabalenka, Pegula is setting her sights on the final match. Following the semi-final, she proudly stated: “For what I did in the tiebreak, I’m just really proud of myself.
“I’ve played so much tennis the last few weeks, so many three-set matches, but I feel like I’m very tough right now and I’m just using that [feeling] as best as I can.”

Her opponent in the final, Gauff, who triumphed over Jasmine Paolini 6-4, 6-3 in their semi-final, commented after her victory: “Sabalenka and Pegula are great players, and I’ve lost to them both before. But overall, I’m just going to focus on my side of the court and try to control the things I can control.”
Gauff, who clinched the second Grand Slam title of her career at the French Open in June, has been tipped as the slight favorite for Sunday’s final as she seeks her second WTA Tour title of the year. However, she faces a formidable challenge against Pegula, who has already claimed three WTA Tour titles in 2025.
