PHOENIX — One man is dead and another is in custody after a family argument in west Phoenix turned deadly on Sunday night, authorities said.
According to the Phoenix Police Department, 31-year-old Brandon Alvarez was arrested for shooting and killing his stepfather Jaunarius Moreno.
Alvarez faces second-degree murder charges for the fatal shooting, police said.
What led to the deadly shooting in west Phoenix?
Officers reportedly responded to a home near 39th and Maryland avenues for reports of a shooting around 7:35 p.m.
According to Phoenix police, they detained Alvarez who called and told 911 operators he shot his 57-year-old stepfather.
Officers then cleared the home and found Moreno in the backyard suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, police said.
The Phoenix Fire Department responded and pronounced Moreno dead on the scene.
Police said that preliminary information suggests that Alvarez and Moreno were verbally arguing in the backyard when the disagreement escalated and Alvarez pulled out a firearm and shot Moreno.
