HURRICANE, W.Va. (WTAP) – A West Virginia family physician has been elected to one of the most prestigious leadership positions in family medicine.
Dr. Tracy Hendershot of Mineral Wells was selected to serve on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Family Physicians during the organization’s Congress of Delegates in Anaheim, California, on Oct. 6, 2025. The AAFP represents nearly 130,000 family physicians, residents and medical students across the United States.
Hendershot was chosen from among 10 national candidates for the position, which will allow him to help guide the AAFP’s national policy and strategic initiatives. His focus areas will include improving access to care, advancing preventive medicine and supporting family physicians in every practice setting.
Leadership theme focuses on collaboration
The newly elected board member has adopted the leadership theme “Unity in Uncertainty,” reflecting his commitment to fostering collaboration, resilience and innovation within the medical profession during a time of rapid change in healthcare delivery.
Long history of medical leadership
Hendershot has established himself as a respected leader in West Virginia’s medical community, particularly known for his service to rural and underserved populations. He has also been active in mentoring emerging physicians and participating in state and national advocacy efforts.
The West Virginia Academy of Family Physicians, which announced Hendershot’s election, represents nearly 1,000 members statewide and says it is committed to advancing family medicine through education, advocacy and leadership.
