Phoenix Sky Harbor refuses to show TSA video on government shutdown

  • October 14, 2025

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport has joined several other U.S. airports in refusing to show a controversial video from the Department of Homeland Security that is designed to play at TSA checkpoints.

The Trump administration created the video to address the federal government shutdown, but it has drawn criticism for its partisan messaging that blames Democrats for the closure.

In the video, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said, “Democrats in Congress refuse to fund the federal government, and because of this, many of our operations are impacted, and most of our TSA employees are working without pay.”

Sky Harbor declined to show the video, citing airport policy that prohibits political content from being displayed in the airport.

Other airports across the country, such as those in Seattle, Las Vegas, Portland, Oregon and Charlotte, North Carolina, have raised concerns that the video could violate the Hatch Act, which restricts the political activities of government workers and prevents the use of federal resources for partisan purposes.

The government shutdown has dragged into its third week with no signs of ending. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said that this shutdown could be the longest ever.
