NBC10 has confirmed that an off-duty firefighter was found dead at a home in the Holmesburg section of Northeast Philadelphia on Wednesday morning.
And, police said that a homicide investigation is now underway.
However, officials did not immediately provide further information on just what happened at the home on the 5700 block of Shelmire Avenue, where police and fire crews were working early Wednesday.
According to Daniel McCarty, executive chief of the Philadelphia Fire Department, fire crews were at the scene on Wednesday morning and his department was working with the Philadelphia Police Department following an incident at a home on that block.
“I can say the fire department is working closely with the Philadelphia Police Department at this time,” he told reporters gathered outside on Wednesday.
When talking to reporters at about 7:30 a.m., McCarty wouldn’t immediately discuss just what happened inside the property or who was involved.
He also would not initially discuss whether or not if a firefighter was involved in the incident.
When asked why firefighters were spotted embracing outside the property as police went into the building, McCarthy noted that it had been “a rough day.”
“Today’s a rough day. Definitely a rough day,” he said.
NBC10 has since confirmed with fire officials that an unnamed off-duty firefighter was found dead at the home.
Officials with the police department have said that a homicide investigation is underway at the property.
NBC10 is working to learn more about the incident.
