A man is in custody after two people were shot at a Walmart in suburban Evergreen Park Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Just before 3 p.m. Wednesday, police responded to a report of an active shooter at the Walmart, located at 2500 West 95th Street in Evergreen Park. Officers cleared the store and located two victims with gunshot wounds, police said.

Dozens of officers and police vehicles surrounded the retailer in the aftermath of the incident.

A 23-year-old man was found with multiple gunshots in his leg, and a 70-year-old woman was found with a gunshot in her foot. They were both transported to local hospitals for treatment, police said.

Authorities said the shooting unfolded when a man exited a vehicle and chased and shot toward the 23-year-old as he was walking into the store.

Witnesses told police what direction they saw the man flee, police said. Officers found the man during a search of the area and took him into custody on the 9300 block of Country Club Drive.

Police later found the vehicle the man fled in on the 800 block of West Marquette.

The investigation remains ongoing.
