Emily Rodriguez is over 2,000 miles away from home, living her dream of playing college basketball. She’s carried her culture with her every step of the way.
IOWA CITY, Iowa — Love for the game is what brought Iowa sophomore guard Emely Rodriguez from La Romana, Dominican Republic to Iowa city, Iowa. Love for the people back home is what fuels her out on the court.
“I’ve always dreamed of being here, being on this stage,” said Rodriguez. “I love when kids, they see me on social media, and they always tell me that they want to be like me. So that really pushes me to be better on the court.”
After a breakout season at UCF where she was an All-Big 12 Freshman Team selection, Rodriguez transferred to Iowa. Her teammates have embraced her grit and passion.
“Emely has been really great,” said Iowa sophomore guard Taylor Stremlow. “She’s a bulldog. I think she’s so passionate about the game of basketball and it’s very contagious. She’s going do great things here.”
While Rodriguez has been able to live her dream, it’s also come with a platform that’s allowed her to give back. Rodriguez put on a free basketball camp for kids her in hometown back in August.
“That was something that I always wanted to do,” said Rodriguez. “So, the first time I had the opportunity to do it, I just enjoyed my time at home, did it for the kids, for the community and it was incredible. All the kids loved it.”
When she puts on the Iowa jersey, Rodriguez knows she’s representing more than just the Hawkeyes. She’s also representing her culture.
“I love when I see people supporting me because I’m Latina and I’m in Iowa,” said Rodriguez. “I really love it and I’m proud to be here.”
Rodriguez and the Hawkeyes begin their season on Nov. 3 against Southern.
