PHOENIX — Waymo and DoorDash are partnering to deliver groceries and meal orders across metro Phoenix, the autonomous driving technology company announced on Thursday.

Upon placing an order, a customer will have the option to select autonomous vehicle delivery at participating merchants in the 315-square-mile service area, which covers parts of Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa and Chandler.

If they are paired with a self-driving car, customers can open the trunk with their DoorDash app to retrieve their items.

“We are excited to make everyday errands easier with the Waymo Driver, offering the added peace of mind that comes with our safe and reliable technology,” Nicole Gavel, head of business development and strategic partnerships at Waymo, said in a release.

“Through our partnership with DoorDash, we leverage our proven delivery experience to provide customers with a seamless, contact-free way to get items they need, whether it’s groceries or a quick bite.”

Waymo will begin delivering orders from DashMart, DoorDash’s convenience, grocery and retail stores. The company said it plans to expand deliveries to other merchants across the Valley, “over time.”

Waymo also announced it is offering DashPass members special promotions for its ridesharing service.

“DashPass is designed to give consumers consistent value, convenience and access to the best of their communities, and our partnership with Waymo builds on that promise,” David Richter, vice president of business and corporate development at DoorDash, said in a press release.

“Together, we’re giving members access to, and savings on, a new and delightful experience, while advancing our vision for a multi-modal autonomous future of local commerce.”

The company that started as Google’s self-driving car project has been operating in the East Valley since 2017 and introduced fully autonomous public rides in 2020. Its robotaxis have been available to metro Phoenix riders since October 2023.

The autonomous driving technology company also announced a similar partnership with Uber Eats in April 2024.
