Suns coach Jordan Ott gives update on Mark Williams, Jalen Green

Jordan Ott gives updates on injured players who might miss the season opener.

The Phoenix Suns have reduced their standard roster to 14 players after waiving Jared Butler, David Duke Jr., Damion Baugh and Tyrese Samuel.

Butler was at Friday’s practice, staying afterward getting up shots with Suns guard Collin Gillespie. Butler has played four NBA seasons for the Utah Jazz, Oklahoma City Thunder, Washington Wizards and Philadelphia 76ers.

NBA teams must have their standard rosters down to 15 players before the start of the 2025-26 regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 21.

Leaving a slot open gives the Suns roster flexibility, particularly for a possible trade during the season.

Butler, Duke Jr., Baugh and Samuel were all on non-guaranteed training camp deals. Butler and Duke Jr. were waived Friday, Oct. 17.

The Suns parted with Baugh and Samuel on Oct. 15.

Out of the four, Butler played in all four Phoenix preseason games.

The 6-foot-3-inch guard out of Baylor scored a game-high 35 points to go along with nine assists to zero turnovers and seven rebounds in leading Phoenix to an 113-104 victory Oct. 14 over the Los Angeles Lakers at Mortgage Matchup Center to end preseason play for the Suns.

“Just having fun, believing in myself,” Butler said after Tuesday’s game as he shot 5-of-9 from 3 in the win.

The Suns rested Devin Booker, Dillon Brooks, Grayson Allen, Ryan Dunn, Collin Royce O’Neale, Nick Richards and Gillespie for their final preseason game.

Mark Williams and Jalen Green didn’t play in any of Phoenix’s four preseason games.

The Suns have had Williams on a plan to prepare him leading up to the season opener while Green has been dealing with a left hamstring injury. Phoenix went 3-1 in preseason play.

Here’s an updated Phoenix roster that includes three two-way players, Koby Brea, CJ Huntley and Isaiah Livers. NBA teams can have up to three two-way players.
