JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said a bicyclist died Monday night after being hit by an SUV on Jacksonville’s Southside.

According to police, the cyclist, a man in his late 20s, was riding his bike near the entrance of Cape House apartments by Hodges Boulevard, when a dark-colored SUV hit him before fleeing the scene.

Medical crews with the Jacksonville Fire Rescue said the cyclist died at the scene.

The crash marks the 138th traffic fatality in Duval County this year and the eighth involving a bicyclist.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information about the hit-and-run vehicle to call 630-05000, email them at JSOCrimeTips@jaxsheriff.org, or contact CrimeStoppers at 866-845-TIPS where callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
