PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — “Million Dollar Quartet” shines a spotlight on four major figures in rock and roll: Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins.
The show is based on a real-life jam session between the four in December of 1956 at Sun Records, with its legendary owner, Sam Phillips.
Along with the five men, the show includes one woman named Dyanne. She is a fictional character based on Elvis’s real-life girlfriend at the time who was there that night and sang along with the quartet.
The musical weaves together drama, humor and a whole lot of music-from Blue Suede Shoes to Hound Dog, Great Balls of Fire, I Walk the Line and Peace in the Valley.
Kathryn Brunner, who plays Dyanne, says the musical showcases the competition among the four musical icons but also the respect they had for each other.
Matteo Scammel, who plays Elvis, describes the show as a blast and says it’s some of the most fun he’s ever had on stage.
Both say they hope audiences appreciate the historic significance of that night in 1956 while also jumping out of their seats for a joyful dance party.
