Around NYC

1. Federal agents detain immigrants on Canal Street

Federal agents arrested several street vendors on Canal Street Tuesday afternoon in what witnesses called an unprecedented show of force in Chinatown.

Officials said the operation targeted counterfeit goods, though advocates and elected leaders described it as an overreach that left the community shaken. City Hall confirmed the NYPD was not involved.

2. Mayoral candidates prep for final debate ahead of early voting

The stage is set for one last face-off in New York City’s mayoral race.

NY1 will host the final debate Wednesday at 7 p.m. from the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center in Queens.

Independent Andrew Cuomo, Democrat Zohran Mamdani and Republican Curtis Sliwa will spar in the 90-minute televised event, which includes a lightning round and candidate-to-candidate questions.

WNYC/Gothamist and the news outlet The City are co-hosting the debate alongside NY1. Viewers can find out how to catch the political crossfire here.

3. Cuomo’s subway proposal similar to current MTA capital plan

Independent mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo reiterated his plan Tuesday to take over and modernize New York City’s subway system, a proposal he first floated this summer.

Speaking before the Association for a Better New York, Cuomo outlined a city-led approach to cleaning and upgrading the transit network, though many of his proposals mirror existing MTA projects. Transit advocates questioned both the feasibility and originality of the plan, noting the state funds most of the system and that Cuomo once oversaw the MTA as governor.
