New York state says a “historic” amount of money is being invested to make sure roads are renewed.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Wednesday the largest paving project in New York history — $800 million to redo more than 2,100 lane miles of road — will take place during the 2026 construction season
The 180-plus projects will be happening in every region across the state.
The funding is part of an additional $800 million included in the state budget. It’s meant to strengthen the Department of Transportation’s five-year capital plan. This investment builds on earlier plans. This means next year, New York is set to spend $1.2 billion to repave 4,000 miles.
“We also have to do this because we’re bringing a lot of businesses, particularly upstate,” Hochul said. “A lot more businesses, a lot of construction going on. We got Micron down the road. We have so many projects everywhere. And so, we have to make sure that our roads are safe and reliable.”
With this announcement, the governor is warning drivers to see road crews out like never before next year.
