Arne Slot says striker Alexander Isak will need further assessment to determine the extent of the groin problem which forced him out of Liverpool’s 5-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League.

Slot’s side emphatically stopped the rot after four straight defeats, but victory in Germany came at a cost with injuries to Isak and Jeremie Frimpong.

“Alex went close a few times but had to go off at half-time,” Slot said. “That’s the difficult balance we’re having with him. When he first came, he had hardly trained, so you bring him step by step.

“Then you feel like, yeah, there must be a moment where he can play twice a week. The first time we try, he has to go off because he felt his groin a little bit.

“If he had been in the red zone, then we wouldn’t have played him. I’m hoping that this isn’t a bad one because if he would be out now for a few weeks that would put him back a lot.”

Netherlands international Frimpong limped off during the first half after injuring his hamstring for the second time this season.

“We know we have the quality and the team that can compete, but it’s not really helpful that with Alisson being out, with Giovanni Leoni being out, I expect Jeremie to also definitely be out now for a few weeks,” Slot added.

“Although people like to talk about us as if we have 25 to 30 first team players, when we play 11 versus 11 in training we almost always need one or two players from the under-21s.

“Jeremie only came back from a hamstring injury a few weeks ago. He played for the national team one game, came back to us and now unfortunately, he had to go off.”

Liverpool return to action on Saturday when they travel to Brentford. Slot’s side then host Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup fourth round next Wednesday.
