A teenager who fell from the back of a moving tram has tragically died with bystanders seen rushing to his aid immediately after the incident.

The 18-year-old was seen clinging to the rear of a tram on Errol St in West Melbourne about 10.45pm on September 29 when he lost his grip and fell.

CCTV from the scene showed the teen tragically falling onto the road before losing consciousness.

His friends and passersby rushed to help him before he was taken to hospital with catastrophic head injuries, where he later died.

“Police were not notified of the incident at the time but have since investigated the matter,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

A report has been prepared for the Coroner.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant footage or information is urged to contact police.
