Employers have called for major fixes to unlawful dismissal laws to hold back a massive surge in claims, which the head of the workplace tribunal has warned are largely meritless applications trying to leverage payouts from bosses.

Fair Work Commission president Justice Adam Hatcher has publicly raised concerns about the extraordinary rise in claims, particularly regarding dismissals, that are on track to surpass 50,000 for this financial year – the third consecutive record high in three years.
