PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A man who was hospitalized after getting into a shootout with Phoenix officers last month has moved from a hospital bed to behind bars, police announced on Thursday.
Investigators said 22-year-old Francisco Torres was released from the hospital and booked into jail on one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. A mug shot hasn’t been released.
On Sept. 2, shortly after 11:30 a.m., officers surrounded an apartment in the area of 17th Avenue and Tonto Street, north of Buckeye Road.
“Phoenix Police Task Force,” an officer can be heard yelling in body camera video released last month. “Open the door!” said another. “Search warrant!” yelled an officer.
Phoenix PD released on Tuesday edited bodycam videos that show a short shootout between a suspect and police earlier this month that injured 2 officers.
As officers moved in, police said Torres opened fire on the officers. One officer fired back, hitting Torres.
Police said one officer, later identified as Officer Michael Paulson, was shot and taken to the hospital with injuries that weren’t life-threatening. Another officer wasn’t shot but was injured during the incident.
Torres had life-threatening injuries, but healed enough at the hospital that he could be brought to jail. It’s unclear what his bond has been set at.
