LOS ANGELES — On Friday, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass named Jaime Moore as the next chief of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

According to the department, Chief Moore joined the LAFD in May 1995 and has been assigned to all four geographic bureaus of the city. He was promoted to captain in 2003, Captain II in 2008, and is recognized by many because of his time as a public information officer for the LAFD and various incident management teams across the state of California.

Born in Delhi, Louisiana, Moore has spent his entire life in Southern California, the department said on its website. He was raised in the Venice-Mar Vista area of Los Angeles in a Mexican-American household.

Moore graduated from Santa Monica High School, earned his Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), and earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration and Emergency Management from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB).

United Firefighters of Los Angeles City, the union that represents LAFD firefighters, approved and praised Bass’ decision saying in a post on X the union looked “forward to working with Jaime Moore as the next Fire Chief.”

United Firefighters of Los Angeles City looks forward to working with Jaime Moore as the next Fire Chief of the @LAFD . The LAFD is the most understaffed and under-resourced fire department in the country and we need to ensure our firefighters and paramedics have the resources they need to serve the city of Los Angeles effectively. Throughout his career with the LAFD, Chief Moore has shown strong leadership and a deep commitment to the department. His background and experience within the ranks has demonstrated that he’s the right leader at the right time to move the LAFD forward.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
