IDAHO FALLS – The Idaho Hospital Association (IHA) recently honored Dr. Kenneth Krell, a distinguished ICU physician from Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center (EIRMC), with the Excellence in Medicine Award.

Krell received the award at this year’s IHA Annual Convention on Oct. 7.

“Krell was selected to recognize his extraordinary dedication, compassion and unwavering commitment to his patients and community,” according to a statement released on Friday.

Krell began working at EIRMC in 1982, first as an ICU physician and, more recently, as the Program Director of EIRMC’s Internal Medicine Residency.

“His courageous leadership through the COVID-19 pandemic included chairing EIRMC’s crisis committee, advising the regional Health Department, serving on Idaho’s SIDMAC committee, and providing calm, expert public guidance through testimony and media,” today’s statement read.

ICU Director and close colleague, Kristi Caldera, RN, praised Krell’s tireless work during those years, when he was often the first in and the last out, supporting patients, staff and families alike.

“I’ve known of Dr. Krell’s reputation as a distinguished ICU physician for years,” said Brian Whitlock, President/CEO of the Idaho Hospital Association. “I’ve also had the privilege of watching him step outside the walls of the ICU to take a leadership role in ensuring all Idahoans have access to care. His leadership through the pandemic was nothing short of heroic.”

Krell has displayed “a remarkable commitment to service throughout his entire career. He is known in his community for his compassion, brilliance at the bedside, and unwavering integrity,” according to today’s statement.

“I hear frequently from patients and providers alike how greatly his clinical presence is missed, even as he continues to serve in new ways,” said Patricia Howell, EIRMC’s chief medical officer.

Though he “retired” from ICU care, Krell found renewed purpose in Graduate Medical Education, dedicating himself to training residents not only to be knowledgeable but to be exceptional clinicians.

His passion for teaching has deeply shaped the EIRMC residency program and, in turn, the future of medicine in Idaho. His legacy is one of innovation, leadership, sacrifice, and mentorship.

Krell’s impact on the Eastern Idaho community and the field of medicine is immeasurable.

IHA is proud to honor him with this prestigious award.

A statewide, nonprofit association, IHA brings hospital and healthcare leaders together in pursuit of quality healthcare across Idaho.
