The Floyd of Rosedale trophy is on the line once again Saturday afternoon as Iowa hosts rival Minnesota in the latest installment of one of the Big Ten’s oldest rivalries. This will be the 119th meeting all-time between the Hawkeyes and the Golden Gophers.
Though Minnesota has the advantage with a 63-53-2 all-time record against Iowa, the Hawkeyes have dominated modern proceedings. Iowa has an 11-2 record since 2012, bolstered by an eight-game winning streak from 2015-22.
Minnesota snapped that skid with a 12-10 win in 2023, its first victory in Iowa City since 1999. The Golden Gophers have not won two straight road games in this series since 1979-81.
Outside of the obvious rivalry implications, this is an important matchup for both sides. They both enter Saturday’s contest with a 5-2 record, including a 3-1 showing in Big Ten play. Though it’s certainly a longshot to call either Iowa or Minnesota a legitimate College Football Playoff contender, there’s a path to an at-large bid for any 10-2 team.
That makes winning imperative for the Golden Gophers and the Hawkeyes, if only to preserve that outside shot for another week.
