As La Jolla’s three high school football teams head into their regular-season finales this week, The Bishop’s School and La Jolla High School will try to rebound from tough losses, while La Jolla Country Day School aims to keep up its recent momentum.
Army-Navy 28, Bishop’s 21
The Knights went into their Coastal League showdown at Army-Navy Academy of Carlsbad on Oct. 24 riding a three-game winning streak in which they had outscored opponents 137-0. If they could beat the Warriors and league rival Santa Fe Christian to cap the regular season, Bishop’s could clinch the Coastal title.
But those hopes were dashed with the defeat to Army-Navy, which improved its season record to 7-1 and league mark to 2-1. The Knights dropped to 7-2 on the season and 1-2 in league play.
Quarterback Cash Herrera threw a pair of touchdown passes to Dane Larson for the Knights, and Loic Smedra returned a fumble for a TD.
Santa Fe Christian of Solana Beach heads into its home matchup against Bishop’s at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, with a 9-0 season record and 3-0 in league.
St. Augustine 41, La Jolla High 35
St. Augustine’s Paisios Polamalu was too much for the Vikings, running for 316 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 10.9 yards per carry and catching a TD pass in the Saints’ home victory Oct. 24.
St. Augustine needed Polamalu’s school-record rushing effort to overcome La Jolla receiver Carson Diehl’s 13 pass receptions for 238 yards and four TDs from quarterback Emerson Rota.
The Vikings (5-4 overall, 2-2 in the Eastern League) will wrap up the regular season on the road against Madison of San Diego (3-6) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30.
La Jolla Country Day 35, Classical Academy 21
Marvin Jones III threw for 68 yards and a touchdown, caught a touchdown pass and ran for another TD for Country Day as he also forced a fumble and made 11 tackles on defense in the Torreys’ victory over Classical Academy at Orange Glen High School in Escondido on Oct. 23.
Country Day also benefited from Jett Astephen’s two TD passes, Quentin Cesaire’s TD reception and 99-yard fumble return for a score and Darius Nwagbuo’s three interceptions.
The win was the Torreys’ third in their past four games and boosted their season record to 4-5 and Coastal League mark to 2-2. Classical Academy fell to 2-7 overall.
Country Day will conclude the regular season at home vs. Coastal Academy of Oceanside (8-1) at 7 p.m. Oct. 30.
