NEPTUNE BEACH, Fla. – Police are investigating after an elderly couple and their dog were found dead in their Neptune Beach home Saturday afternoon, but many questions remain unanswered as authorities have released limited information about the incident.
The deceased, both 77 years old, were discovered at their residence on North Street, between Second and Third Street.
The man was identified by a neighbor only as “Mike,” though police have not officially released any names.
Authorities say preliminary findings suggest the deaths may have been accidental, but the exact cause remains unknown. The times of death are also unknown.
Both the Neptune Beach Police Department and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident.
Officials have not responded to requests for additional information as of Sunday evening.
According to neighbors, a family member discovered the bodies and made the initial 911 call, though law enforcement has not confirmed these details.
“Devastated. They were good people,” said Mike Miller, who recalled frequent interactions with the man and his dog, named Ellie. “They used to walk by here pretty much every day. They’d stop by and say hey, and spend a little time with us.”
The presence of investigators shocked residents in what they describe as a typically quiet neighborhood.
“Crime scene tape, photographers and detectives, investigators. It was intense,” said Stephen Dickerson, who witnessed the investigation unfold. “From what I know about Neptune Beach, it’s unusual.”
Police have indicated there are no signs of foul play, though the investigation continues.
News4JAX has reached out to both the Neptune Beach Police Department and JSO for additional details about the investigation.
JSO tells News4Jax although their Homicide Unit is helping with the case, they defer all questions to the Neptune Beach Police Department.
