DENVER — Cowboys officials made their first comments since placing cornerback Trevon Diggs on injured reserve on Saturday.
Following the Cowboys’ loss to the Broncos on Sunday, team owner Jerry Jones and coach Brian Schottenheimer said Diggs needs to get healthy.
Diggs is dealing with a knee issue and concussion symptoms. Schottenheimer said Diggs, who was placed in concussion protocol last week, remains in the first phase.
There are five stages a player must pass when he’s in the concussion protocol.

“After visiting with the medical staff, we felt like in the best interest of the team and Trevon was to get him back healthy,” Schottenheimer said. “He missed last game (Washington). He was going to miss this game. He is not through phase one yet of the concussion protocol. The knee has been problematic throughout the season. There’s been games (of) ‘Can he play? Can he not?’ He’s a really good player and we just want to get him back and get him healthy again to be able to help us finish strong.”
Jones said Diggs needs to get in shape physically before he can return to the field. Diggs is eligible to come off IR for the Nov. 27 game against Kansas City.
Jones was asked if Diggs would play again for the Cowboys this season.
“Why not?” he said. “Yes. But there’s a little beyond my expectations. We got to see how he heals from his injury. He hasn’t been physically there in full shape for us.”
