Three people were hospitalized early Monday after, officials said, a stolen vehicle struck an ambulance that was on its way to a Philadelphia hospital, before it continued on to strike a building that was under construction.
According to police, the incident unfolded at about 1:03 a.m. on Monday after an Acura RDX, believed to be stolen out of Winslow Township, traveled into the city.
At that time, Port Authority Police had initially attempted to stop the vehicle as it entered the city, but the vehicle fled and officers determined not to follow it in an active pursuit, officials said.
Instead, a search was on for the stolen car, and officials said, shortly after that search began, police received a report of a crash at the intersection of 10th and Race streets in Center City Philadelphia.
Here, officials said, the vehicle that was being sought struck an ambulance that was headed to a nearby hospital.
The impact, officials said, caused three people to suffer injuries, including the individual that was already being cared for inside the ambulance at the time of the crash.
After striking the ambulance, police said, the stolen vehicle continued on through a fence and into a building that was under construction at that intersection before coming to rest.
At least two people fled from the stolen vehicle and they are still being sought, according to police.
Three people were taken to a nearby hospital after the crash, however police did not immediately detail the severity of their injuries.
No arrests have yet been made in this incident but, police officials said an investigation is ongoing.
