Houston Police Department Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir speaks to reporters following a shooting involving an officer in the 2400 block of South Loop West in Houston on Oct. 27, 2025.
A man accused of trespassing at an apartment complex in south Houston was in critical condition Monday morning after police shot him multiple times, according to the Houston Police Department.
HPD Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir said during a news conference said that at 7 a.m. Monday, police responded to a report of a suspicious person with a weapon in the 2400 block of South Loop West, near NRG Stadium. According to Bashir’s preliminary report, a security guard at the apartment complex said he had pepper-sprayed a man who had pointed a weapon at him. The man then allegedly went into a vacant apartment.
“The officers made their way to that apartment and made verbal contact with the suspect while he barricaded himself inside that location,” Bashir said. “The officer continued to give verbal commands, and at some point during the encounter, the suspect [broke] the window from inside the apartment and extended his hand out with what appeared to be a weapon.”
Officers then fired their guns, and the man inside the apartment later surrendered with apparent injuries, according to Bashir.
Bashir said the man appeared to have been shot more than once and was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
At the time of the news conference, Bashir said an HPD crimes unit was processing the scene, and police did not have any information on the weapon the man allegedly had.
Criminal charges were pending against the man, according to Bashir, who said the man was believed to have been trespassing at the time of the shooting.
The man’s identity had not been released as of late Monday morning. Police described him as a Black man in his 40s. The identities of the officers who shot him also were not immediately released. Police said no one else was injured.
Bashir said body-worn camera footage from the officers involved in the shooting would be released within 30 days.
