A 37-year-old man was arrested this week for allegedly gunning down and killing another man in Shelltown nearly three years ago, homicide investigators said Wednesday.

Marcanthony Valencia was arrested Monday afternoon at his work site on Twain Avenue near Mission Gorge Road in connection with the September 2022 killing of 40-year-old Mario Galvez, San Diego police Lt. Lou Maggi said.

Valencia was booked into San Diego jail on suspicion of murder, owning a firearm without a serial number and possessing an assault weapon, according to Sheriff’s Office online arrest logs. He is being held without bail.

On the night of the shooting, officers received multiple calls reporting a man had been shot on Una Avenue near Cole Street around 5:50 p.m., Maggi said. Witnesses said the gunman ran to a mid-size sedan and drove away.

When officers arrived, they found Galvez suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body and head.

He was taken to a hospital, where he died less than two hours later, Maggi said.

Detectives said that during their investigation, they learned Galvez was standing outside his vehicle when he got into a verbal fight with the gunman on the street. The altercation escalated, the shooter pulled out a handgun and multiple shots were fired.

Investigators said they used a combination of “technology and tenacity” to identify Valencia as a suspect.
