We love a good dive bar. Thankfully, Houston has a bunch. From bohemian hole-in-the-walls, to haunted wine dens, and everything in between, there’s much from which to pick your poison in Space City. However, only one city dive got a shoutout on Southern Living’s recent list of the “25 Legendary Dive Bars In The South”: Dixie Chicken in College Station.

Opened in 1974, the Dixie Chicken is a famed College Station dive. “The oldest bar in Northgate” has hosted Aggies across generations with countless stories under its belt-buckle. In fact, the dive encourages visitors to share their stories of Dixie Chicken, as featured on its website.

Often referred to as the “Chicken”, the historic dive possesses an atmosphere of no-frills fun, where Aggies come to watch the game, have a couple drinks, and maybe play a game of pool. The venue houses a kitchen serving burgers, sandwiches, and classic fare alongside pitchers of cold beer.

The Dixie Chicken was one of three Texas dive bars to make Southern Living’s list, in company with Donn’s Depot in Austin and Planet Marfa in Marfa.

Here’s what Southern Living had to say of the Dixie Chicken:

“Since 1974, Dixie Chicken has been a hotbed for Texas A&M University students, locals, and alumni. The walls are covered with retro 1970s beer signs, and the beloved watering hole has many stories and gatherings under its belt, including everything from college reunions to marriage proposals.”
