San Diego County’s coastal areas were under a dense fog advisory Tuesday night, and the limited visibility forced a ground stop at San Diego International Airport.
The advisory was issued just after 7:45 p.m. and was expected to continue until 6 a.m. Wednesday for Oceanside, Vista, Carlsbad, Encinitas, San Diego, National City and Chula Vista, according to the National Weather Service. The agency said visibility was dropping to one-quarter mile or less, which made impacts to driving conditions and air travel possible.
Those foggy conditions prompted the Federal Aviation Administration to order a ground stop for SAN starting at 8:48 p.m. It was initially expected to last until 10:15 p.m. but was later extended by an hour.
SAN had experienced at least 85 delays and two cancellations by 9 p.m., according to the flight tracking website FlightAware. The airport’s website was also showing dozens of delayed flights at that time.

“If driving, slow down, use your headlights, and leave plenty of distance ahead of you,” the NWS said.
