HOUSTON — Several people were hurt in a 2-alarm fire at a west Houston apartment complex Wednesday morning, according to the Houston Fire Department.
HFD said they were called to the complex on Olympia Drive near Westheimer and Beltway 8 at 8:33 a.m. and the first units arrived on scene within four minutes.
The fire department said four people suffered from smoke inhalation and one person had a non-fire-related injury. Two people, including the person who did not have a fire-related injury, were taken to area hospitals.
During the fire, HFD said two people were able to escape the fire on their own by jumping from the second floor onto a couch. Two other people were rescued by firefighters.
A witness told KHOU 11 he was returning home when he saw the fire and jumped into action.
“Blazing fires, people trying to get out of the windows, and just tried to help out the best way we could,” said Michael Meoier. “We put down bedding so they could jump, actually, another resident came with a ladder so we can help them get down, but it was pretty intense.
A total of 16 units were involved in the fire, but HFD said five of those units were unoccupied at the time of the fire. Officials said the building is believed to be a total loss.
The apartment’s management told HFD they were working with residents to relocate them to different units within the complex. The American Red Cross was also contacted to provide support to those who need it.
HFD said the fire was knocked down by 10 a.m.
Arson investigators were working to determine the cause of the fire.
No firefighters were reported injured.
