St. Mary’s Basilica hosting 12th annual Dia de los Muertos celebration

  • October 30, 2025

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Día de los Muertos, known as the Day of the Dead in English, is a celebration that honors family members and other loved ones who have passed away. Large celebrations are being held across the Valley, including one historic church in downtown Phoenix.

St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Basilica, the oldest Catholic parish church in the metro Phoenix area, is hosting its 12th annual Día de los Muertos festival this weekend.

During Día de los Muertos, family members set up ofrendas filled with bright marigold flowers, photos of loved ones and pets, and their favorite foods and drinks as offerings. The offerings are believed to encourage visits from those who have departed, joining the living for the grand celebration.

“It’s a time to honor the memory of our loved ones who have gone before us. It’s an opportunity to share in something that’s deeply rooted in culture and tradition, and profoundly Christian,” Fr. Fernando Camou explained. “All these different symbols, every flower, marigolds, they all have symbolic meaning, reminding us of our faith. This is not a superstition, this is an expression of love; a tangible expression, reminder that our loved ones are still alive.”

Fr. Fernando says while some may feel sorrow from their loved ones passing, the celebration represents a time of hope. “Grief and gratitude, they go together with our faith,” he said.

A community ofrenda will be set up, and guests are encouraged to bring non-original photos of family members to place on the ofrenda. Over 30 vendors will be set up at the artisan market, and children can take part in free activities and face painting. In addition, families can watch live, cultural entertainment and eat from over a dozen food truck options.

The celebration will be held on Nov. 2 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the church, located at 231 N 3rd Street.
