St. Vincent de Paul is planning to hold a drive-thru in Phoenix to hand out food boxes on Nov. 1.
PHOENIX — As food assistance benefits are getting closer to running out, one food bank in Phoenix is seeing long lines of people showing up to get a box of supplies.
Sky12 flew over the St. Mary’s Food Bank on Thursday and captured footage of a long line of cars waiting to get into the facility. The looming cuts to federal assistance are prompting local charities to prepare for a sudden spike in demand.
Milt Liu, CEO of St. Mary’s Food Bank, recently told 12News the organization plans to buy more supplies to address the short-term need and emphasized they won’t turn people away.
Starting in November, benefits distributed through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program are expected to not be given to recipients due to the ongoing government shutdown.
As a result of the pending SNAP cuts, St. Vincent de Paul is hosting a drive-thru of emergency food distribution on Nov. 1 at 7:30 a.m. in Phoenix to hand out food boxes to local families.
An estimated 950,000 people in Arizona received SNAP benefits each month during fiscal year 2024, records show.
