Bodycam video shows dramatic rescue after woman falls in canal

  • October 31, 2025

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A dramatic rescue by Phoenix Police of a woman who fell into a canal was captured on camera.

Newly released body cam video captures the dramatic rescue that happened in the early morning hours of October 14th. The woman claimed she was sitting near the edge of the canal when she fell in.

Police said the woman’s phone was still able to call 911 despite her falling in the water.

Police used a retractable ladder to aid in their rescue efforts.

“Keep climbing, we’re going to get you,” one of the officers can be heard saying to the woman.

As the woman was trying to climb out, she can be heard crying and very emotional.

“Don’t let me go,” the woman says.

The Phoenix Fire Department said she was fortunate to make it out alright, but that isn’t always the case when it comes to scenarios like this.

“They (the canals) can be very dangerous, they have really steep concrete walls that make escape really difficult,” said Captain Mike Johnson with Phoenix Fire. He said another danger of these canals is the deceptive current and what’s underneath the water, including debris that you can get tangled up in or stuck on.

“The current moves very quickly so a lot of people they see the top and think oh I can go swim in it to cool off or many different reasons it’s just a bad idea.”

If you see someone fall in a canal. Captain Johnson said the best thing you can do is call 911. “Do not jump in after them you will become a bigger part of the problem.”
