Hidden City Film Festival seeks entries

The California Center for the Arts, Escondido Foundation will host the new Hidden City Film Festival from Sept. 26-28 at Regal Cinema, celebrating independent film, storytelling and community and spotlighting “boundary-pushing filmmakers and underrepresented voices.” The festival will include a “Feature of the Day” screening, curated short film showcases, filmmaker Q&As, and an awards ceremony honoring standout short films in categories such as Best Narrative, Best Documentary, Pocket Cinema, and Stories of Belonging. Arts shows at library

The Friends of the Fallbrook Library will hold two new free art shows, “Wet Paint! Hydrated Art” and the James Helms Sculpture Collection on display from July 14 to Aug. 29. Parade on Main Street

Julian hosts an Independence Day parade at noon July 4 on Main Street. The parade will include the San Diego Firefighters Emerald Society Pipes and Drums, Drumline Band and the 529 Brass Band. Attendees can join in carrying a huge American flag down Main Street before the start of the parade. The Julian Beer Co. is the grand marshal with the theme, “Freedom, Peace and Prosperity.” Pre-parade activities start at 9:30 a.m. including a western re-enactment, musical performances and pie-eating contests. Alcoholics Anonymous starts text-based Helpline

The North County San Diego Alcoholics Anonymous launched a text-based Helpline for community members who are seeking help, so they can reach someone 24 hours a day. Those looking to become sober can text an AA volunteer any time day or night and receive support from a member of the AA team, which consists of recovering alcoholics. The text helpline is currently available for people in North County, including Carlsbad, Encinitas, Escondido, Julian, Oceanside, Poway, Ramona, San Marcos, Vista and Valley Center. Author readings during Art Walk

The Friends of the Oceanside Public Library in partnership with First Friday Art Walk continues its series of author readings and book signings during the First Friday Art Walk on July 11 and Aug. 1. Brother Benno’s puts on charity golf tournament

Oceanside-based nonprofit Brother Benno’s will put on its seventh annual Charity Golf Tournament on Sept. 9 at Goat Hill Park, 2323 Goat Hill Drive, to raise money for its programs to help North County homeless community members, the working poor and seniors. Check-in is at 10 a.m. followed by 11 a.m. shotgun start. There will be live and silent auctions and a 50-50 raffle. World champion surfer Kelly Slater will again support the event. Registration is $250 per player, including shared golf cart, greens fee, boxed lunch, snacks and refreshments, dinner and swag bag. The San Diego nonprofit Voices for Children is looking for volunteers to serve as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) and stand up for foster children in need. Senior Gleaners in need of volunteers

Volunteers are needed to help Senior Gleaners of San Diego County, a volunteer group that harvests surplus fruit and vegetables from gardens and fields to donate to local nonprofits helping people in need. The mission of the group is to reduce food waste and feed needy community members. The gleaning crews need more volunteers age 55 and older. If your nonprofit would like to submit an event listing or photos of events that have happened recently, please email linda.mcintosh@sduniontribune.com. Include the name of the group, date and time of event, address, cost and contact information for readers within the email text. Event listings should be submitted at least two weeks in advance. Photos should be sent as JPEGs. Include the names of those in the photos from left to right along with the photo credit and permission from the photographer to use the photo in The San Diego Union-Tribune.
