Proposals have been made in cities throughout the Valley to publicly honor conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot September at an event in Utah.
Kirk’s Turning Point USA organization is based in Phoenix — and longtime civil rights activist Jarrett Maupin petitioned the city to rename the Seventh Street bridge near Chase Field after Kirk.
Maupin was scheduled to address the council on Wednesday but was not present when called upon my Mayor Kate Gallego.
“Item 40 is a citizen petition submitted by Jarrett Maupin. Uh, we have two speakers on this item. We’ll begin with Mr. Maupin. … uh, Mr. Maupin?” Gallego said.
The council rejected the proposal, which staff said did not meet the city’s requirements for ceremonial signs.
