The Oregon Department of Transportation is preparing to lay off hundreds of workers after lawmakers’ plans to pass a comprehensive transportation package imploded in the final days of the legislative session that ended Friday.

More than 600 agency workers will likely lose their jobs in the coming weeks, Director Kris Strickler said in an agency-wide email sent shortly after midnight Saturday. That announcement arrived one hour after lawmakers ended the session without directing more money to the agency, which for months said it would be forced to lay off workers without an influx of funding.
