1. Texas judges can refuse to perform same-sex marriages for religious reasons

The Texas Supreme Court has decided that judges in the state can refuse to perform marriages for religious reasons as of last week.

The state’s highest court published a comment to the Texas Code of Judicial Conduct stating that, effective immediately, judges can “publicly refrain from performing a wedding ceremony based upon a sincerely held religious belief.”

2. Amazon con­tractor to lay off over 200 workers in North Texas

According to a filing with the state, Accelore Group, which in based in Richardson, is planning to cut 214 jobs at two of its Amazon Logistics facilities—one in Fort Worth and the other in Mesquite. The layoffs are set for Nov. 1.

3. Mavericks vs. Stars as one Dallas team sues another

Two of Dallas’ beloved sports franchises are at odds. The Dallas Mavericks have filed a breach of contract dispute against the Dallas Stars. The two teams share the same building, the American Airlines Center.

The specifics of the suit allege that the Stars are in breach of a clause in their contract that dictates that the team’s corporate offices must be located in the city of Dallas. The Stars’ offices and practice facility are in Frisco, as they have been since 2003.

4. Cornyn campaign’s energy focuses on Hunt in battle for Senate GOP nomination

Polling from Texas Southern University shows Cornyn and Paxton in a virtual tie with a third of the vote and Hunt trailing at 22%. Still, political scientists expect much of the action until the March primary to be between Hunt and Cornyn.

5. Texas adorned with 3 new Michelin Stars at 2nd annual ceremony

It’s only the second iteration of the Michelin Guide Texas, and the state has already added to its hefty amount of stars and distinctions. From a few newcomers to lots of familiar faces, here are the winners featured in this year’s guide.

In southeastern Jamaica, government workers and residents began clearing roads in a push to reach dozens of isolated communities that sustained a direct hit from one of the most powerful Atlantic storms on record.
