Some Chicago-area residents were greeted by an unpleasant surprise Sunday morning as dense fog blanketed parts of the region.

A dense fog advisory expired at 8 a.m., but fog could still potentially impact some parts of the area to the west and to the south of Chicago, dramatically limiting visibility and even causing slick spots on some area roadways.

The National Weather Service warned of the possibility of freezing fog in some locations, with early morning temperatures dipping below the freezing mark in areas away from the urban heat island surrounding Chicago.

That threat is especially dangerous on elevated surfaces like bridges and overpasses, and motorists are urged to use caution when traversing those areas on Sunday morning.

The fog could also cause visibility issues around the area, with residents urged to slow down, increase their following distance, and to use low-beam headlights when traveling through foggy areas.

That fog should begin to burn off as the morning moves along, paving the way for a calm day with cool temperatures and seasonable conditions. Highs are expected to rise into the low-50s across much of the area to wrap up the weekend, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.
