SAN FRANCISCO — The Red Sox have made another trade with an NL West club.
Boston has dealt lefty reliever Zach Penrod to the Dodgers for cash considerations, sources said Friday. The Red Sox had designated him for assignment Sunday to clear a roster spot in the wake of the Rafael Devers blockbuster.
Penrod, an undrafted free agent signed out of independent ball in August 2023, debuted last September and allowed two runs (one earned) in four innings over seven appearances (2.25 ERA). He was in spring training and had an outside chance to make the Opening Day roster, but suffered an elbow injury and was shut down. The injury, described as an elbow sprain, did not require surgery and Penrod resumed throwing in the early parts of the season. He has been pitching in Worcester, where he has allowed four earned runs and seven hits in 6 ⅓ innings.
Penrod had fallen behind on Boston’s depth chart once the Sox signed lefty relievers Aroldis Chapman and Justin Wilson to join Brennan Bernardino in the mix this season. The club also has Chris Murphy rehabbing with the WooSox and in the 40-man mix. With Los Angeles, Penrod will have an opportunity to contribute to a playoff run, though he might start at Triple-A.
