PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Early returns show voters across Maricopa County are divided on Proposition 409, a nearly $900 million bond that would help Valleywise Health, the county’s public health care system.
According to results posted at 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, there is 50.96% in favor of a bond approval, compared to 49.04% opposed, a difference of about 11,000 votes.
In April, the Maricopa County Special Health Care District Board of Directors voted unanimously to put a $898 million bond question in the hands of voters this year.
In 2014, 63% of voters in Maricopa County approved a $935 million bond for Valleywise Health, which was used to build and open the new medical center last year.
Officials have said the money would be used to build a new 200-bed behavioral health hospital, build a new outpatient specialty center on the main campus, expand pediatric and primary care, enhance physician training, and add observation beds at the medical center.
Dozens of school districts asking for voters to approve higher taxes to help pay for teacher salaries, school supplies, and improvements are also some of the measures in Arizona this election.
More results can be found on the Maricopa County Elections website.
