SEELEY LAKE, Mont. — Two hunters escaped unharmed after a tense encounter with three grizzly bears on the Pyramid Pass Trail near Seeley Lake on the morning of Nov. 5.

The hunters, who had earlier harvested a mule deer buck, were hiking back to retrieve the deer when they spotted the bears about 100 yards away.

Despite their attempts to deter the bears by yelling and waving their arms, the animals continued to charge.

One hunter fired shots, possibly killing two of the bears, while the third retreated towards the deer carcass.

The hunters promptly reported the incident as self-defense to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks.

The U.S. Forest Service has posted warnings at the trailhead to alert visitors of the recent bear activity.
