Bedford City Council has approved a $2.9 million contract with HCI Commercial to renovate Fire Station No. 2.

The project, approved by the council at its Oct. 28 meeting, will eliminate the need for fire trucks and ambulances to enter or exit the building in reverse, Bedford Fire Chief Bill Walker said.

“We don’t have to back up fire engines, we don’t have to back up ambulances, which is a big deal for us, we don’t like doing that,” Walker said of the pull-through improvement.

The Station No. 2 makeover adds individual rooms for privacy, fixes leaks, removes mold, adds approximately 1,100 square feet and creates a fume-free room for protective gear worn by firefighters.

“The entire dorm area is being removed and extended out,” Walker said.

The council in 2024 approved Dallas-based HCI for a $435,000 contract to renovate Station No. 3. For Station No. 2, the city chose HCI from 19 bidders for a $2.9 million renovation contract. The total budgets for the two projects are $708,784 and $3.35 million, respectively.

The Station No. 2 renovation has an estimated 243-day project timeline. Firefighters will be temporarily housed in a mobile home at Station No. 1 during construction.

“There was also some other really good competition out there,” Walker said. HCI Commercial “ultimately came out No. 1 in that process.”
