After hearing songwriter Sara Bareilles perform the song “Salt Then Sour Then Sweet” from Come See Me in the Good Light, it’s difficult to believe she is relatively new to the poetry of Andrea Gibson, the subject of the Apple Original Films documentary that follows the poet after their cancer diagnosis.
“I came to Andrea’s poetry only about a year before I got to meet them and got invited into the world of this film, which has been a truly life-changing experience,” Bareilles said at Deadline’s Sound & Screen: Film event.
It wasn’t just Gibson’s poetry that captivated Bareilles, but also the spirit with which they approached their illness. “They had an incurable cancer diagnosis and came to Instagram with just an incredible amount of transparency, vulnerability, humor and light,” said Bareilles. “It was just an amazing way of holding this very dark matter with tremendous care and grace.”
After being contacted by an “elite, tiny crew of Andrea devotees” determined to tell their story in an intimate way, Bareilles joined the documentary project as executive producer and was able to collaborate with Brandi Carlile and Gibson.

“Andrea and Ryan White, the director, had talked a lot about wanting an original poem at the end of the film, so Brandi and I were given these pages of couplets and ideas – sort of an unfinished love poem to Meg, Andrea’s partner,” she said. “Andrea wanted people to leave the theater feeling just love-soaked. And I think when you see this movie, when you see this film, you will feel soaked in love.”
Gibson attended the film’s world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. They died in July.
Despite the dark subject matter, Bareilles wants is to make sure everyone can see the beauty hidden within the documentary. “The director says this a lot when he’s talking about the film,” she said. “You hear poetry and cancer and you’re like, that sounds like a ‘must miss’ … It is the most life-affirming, hilarious, beautiful, poignant, brilliant film. I was blown away the first time I watched it. I have never felt more, excited to be alive than watching this film.”
It premieres globally on Apple TV on November 14.
