Best Bar – Heights: Monkey’s Tail

We’re going with Lindale Park being considered “Greater Heights,” and therefore allowing us to recognize Monkey’s Tail as one of the Heights area’s and Houston’s finest bars. It’s probably a long time overdue. Opened in 2018, the establishment has fully come into its own with a devoted clientele. There’s an excellent food menu – tacos, burgers and a very cool hot dog – served “here” or to-go, a popular steak night and, naturally, some fantastic cocktails and incredible mocktails poured lovingly by expert, friendly bartenders. Lots of fresh-juiced options in classics like gimlets and daiquiris, but we advocate for trying the bar’s inspired signature originals, with eye-catching monikers like the “Pole Dancer,” the “Thirst Trap” and, of course, the “Claro Que Sí.”  Catching the vibe?

The funky, irreverent tone is imperative to and exceedingly evident at Monkey’s Tail. It doesn’t have to try to be cool, it just is. But in case you’re blind to a good time there is actually a neon sign that glows in a cozy nook of the bar which reads “buena vibra” – good vibes. At the far end of the bar, a different sign reads “callate y bebe” – shut up and drink. At Monkey’s Tail, you get to choose your adventure thanks to the mood that’s set there, one that says anything goes and keeps the interesting drinks coming for your interesting experience.
