EXCLUSIVE: Two Indian cinema powerhouses are teaming up: Priyanka Chopra Jonas is set to star in the next movie from filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli, which he is writing and directing.
Chopra Jonas will star alongside Mahesh Babu.
In addition to distribution in India, the movie, which is currently untitled, is in talks for U.S. distribution with Variance.
Rajamouli’s 2022 feature, RRR won an Oscar for Best Original song for the tune “Naatu Naatu”. That movie followed a fearless warrior who on a perilous mission comes face to face with a steely cop serving British forces in pre-independent India. RRR, reportedly the fourth highest grossing Indian release ever, grossed over $166M at the global box office.
Chopra Jonas recently starred in Amazon Prime’s action-comedy film Heads of State opposite Idris Elba and John Cena. The movie clocked north of 75 million worldwide Prime Video viewers, making it the fourth most-watched Amazon MGM Studios film of all-time on Amazon’s OTT service.
Chopra Jonas will continue her partnership with Prime by appearing next in the action drama The Bluff based on a true story, which she stars in and produced under her production company, Purple Pebble Pictures. Chopra Jonas’ Purple Pebble Pictures has a first look deal with Amazon Studios to develop a slate of features and TV content that spotlight diverse talent and stories from India and the world.
She is also set to star in season 2 of Prime Video’s TV series Citadel.
Chopra Jonas recently produced the documentary Born Hungry, executive produced Oscar-nominated short film Anuja, and the award-winning and Oscar-nominated feature documentary To Kill A Tiger.
She has graced the cover of Time magazine’s “Time 100” issue as one of the “Most Influential People” in the world, and has been listed among Forbes’ “Most Powerful Women.” She has won two National Film Awards, the Indian equivalent of the Academy Awards.
